This book is an excellent blend of traditional and contemporary songs, sensibly organized, with good organization (including several useful indexes, such as scripture verse, topic, alphabetical and first line). It has over entries, some of which are readings, but still far more music than most songbooks/5(26). I found this to be an excellent book written in the right spirit. I personally led music in a "traditional" church for many years. I have also debated Contemporaries and found that his book enumerated to a "t" the arguments used by the Contemporaries as well as the heavy labeling they resort to to marginalize or neutralize a "traditional"/5(). The compilers considered less traditional music that had not been included in the main hymnbook of the Episcopal Church. Noting the merit of other genres, this book was created. It includes spirituals, gospel songs, some African rhythms, and late nineteenth century choruses that offer variations to musical selections/5(). In this work Hazrat Inayat Khan explores the theme of music as life. Music is not limited to one aspect of life; according to the author, it is life – a universal pervasive force that is the key to understanding the world around us and our role in it/5(10).
